Sustainable contracts: What and why?

Companies play an important role in the global sustainability crisis, and the contracts they use in their business operations are central in implementing corporate sustainability. However, the language used in these contracts is typically complex and vague, which obscures the parties’ commitments.

JARGONFREE is a multidisciplinary research group working at Tampere University, Finland. We examine what contracts and codes of conduct currently contain and look like and how they could and should change in order to genuinely promote sustainable development and responsible business. We focus on corporate sustainability due diligence requirements in supply chains, especially supply and procurement contracts.

Our Contract Language project (2024-2026) is funded by the Kone Foundation.
